1. Begin with a Neutral Reset
A calm opening gives you space to collect your thoughts while setting the tone for a healthy exchange. Try something like:

It’s not about sounding polished... it’s about signalling intention. You’re taking control of the energy in the room before emotion takes over.
2. Use a Default Confidence Line
The best communicators don’t wing it... they practice how they’ll respond when things get tense. Your go-to might sound like, “Let’s align before we dive in,” or “Here’s what I recommend based on what we know.” One consistent line lets you think strategically while still sounding natural.
By repeating it often, you turn it into instinct. And when your brain hits pause, instinct keeps the conversation moving forward.
3. Replace Judgment with Curiosity
Blame shuts people down. Curiosity pulls them back in. Instead of asking, “Why did this happen?” use, “What got in the way?” or “What would help you follow through next time?”
That shift keeps accountability on the table while removing shame from the room. You stay in control of tone and direction.
