Stop Taking Advice from People Who Haven’t Been in the Trenches
Feb 17, 2025Why Real-World Experience Matters More Than Theoretical Advice
We live in a world where everyone claims to have the "secret formula" for success. Scroll through social media, and you’ll find self-proclaimed experts telling you how to become a millionaire, retire early, or lead a team like a pro. But here’s the problem—most of them have never actually done it.
Think about it: Would you take fitness advice from someone who has never set foot in a gym? Would you trust business tips from someone who has never built a company? Then why take leadership advice from people who have never managed a team?
The Gap Between Theory and Reality
I won’t pretend to have all the answers. I’m still working, still grinding, still figuring things out. But what I can tell you is what it’s like to be in the trenches—dealing with real leadership struggles, navigating difficult conversations, and making tough decisions under pressure.
The truth is, there’s a massive difference between theory and experience. Sure, books and courses provide valuable insights, but have those authors ever:
-
Had an employee openly challenge their authority because they were the new manager?
-
Been shut down in a meeting because they “haven’t earned their stripes” yet?
-
Managed the tension after getting promoted over someone who felt they deserved it?
That’s the stuff no textbook can prepare you for.
Who You Should Actually Be Learning From
If you want real, actionable advice that actually applies to your leadership journey, seek out mentors who have been in your shoes. Look for people who have faced the challenges you’re dealing with and come out stronger.
Your best mentors?
✔️ Your boss (if they’re experienced and supportive)
✔️ Colleagues who have led teams successfully
✔️ Co-managers who understand the daily challenges
✔️ Real-world leaders sharing their honest experiences, not just feel-good theory
Cut Through the Noise—Find the Right Guidance
There’s no shortage of self-proclaimed gurus online. But if you want to grow as a leader, listen to the people who have actually done the work. Learn from those who have navigated the highs and lows, taken the hits, and earned their stripes the hard way.
That’s the real secret to success.
